PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
Hello Everyone,
School
is starting, and you are forming your teams for the upcoming academic team
competition. One way to get a good start is to attend the OACA Fall Conference
on Saturday, September 6, at Redlands College in El
Reno. I
especially encourage new coaches to attend. This is an excellent way to meet
experienced coaches and get some tips on getting your team ready for
competition. Experienced coaches, come
and meet some old friends. There will be
door prizes at the luncheon.
The
Oklahoma Academic Coaches Association is the organization that recognizes the All
State Academic Team. You need to be a member to nominate your senior for this
honor. If you can't come to the
conference, please submit your dues to be a member. Some schools will pay these dues for you
through Gifted and Talented funds, or they may pay memberships for all coaches.
I

ABOUT THE OACA
The Oklahoma Academic Coaches Association (OACA) is
a non-profit organization whose primary goals are to promote academic
competition among Oklahoma
secondary schools and to recognize and honor an All-State Academic Team at the
conclusion of the Academic Bowl season.
The OACA works closely with the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities
Association (OSSAA) which governs all competitive extra-curricular activities
in Oklahoma
secondary schools.
Our organization holds an annual fall conference
every September in which both new and veteran coaches are provided many
different workshops that cover all aspects of Academic Quiz Bowl
competition. The fall conference will be
at Redlands
Community College in El Reno Saturday, September 6, 2008. Please plan to attend.
Remember: OACA is funded through your annual membership
dues, net proceeds from our fall conference, and donations. WE NEED YOUR MEMBERSHIP TO KEEP OUR
ORGANIZATION STRONG AND ACTIVE! THE OACA
IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE PROMOTION AND RECOGNITION OF ACADEMIC BOWL
PARTICIPATION. Membership dues are only
$30 per year—a small price for what we do for our students. Fall conference cost is $50, and this
includes membership dues, workshops, and lunch.
NEWS FROM THE OSSAA
“Blue Books” have been mailed by Ed Sheakley’s OSSAA office. This book contains valuable
information on the rules and guidelines of Academic Quiz Bowl competition, the
dates of all OSSAA tournaments, a list of the rules meetings, and your entry
form to enter the OSSAA competitions. IT
IS IMPERATIVE THAT THIS FORM BE RETURNED TO OSSAA by September 10. Otherwise, your team will
not be able to participate in
the OSSAA tournaments. If you did not
personally receive your blue book, check with your principal or call Ed Sheakley at the OSSAA, 408-840-1116.
It is vitally important
that coaches attend a rules meeting every year.
These allow the OSSAA representatives to disseminate our rules and rules
changes to all coaches, new and veteran.
We strongly urge all coaches to make the time to attend one of these
meetings. The September 9 rules meeting
will be held during the fall conference.
Any changes will be available on the OSSAA website, www.ossaa.com, under Non-Athletic Activities.

PLEASE NOTE: YOU DO NOT NEED TO
BE PRESENT AT THE CONFERENCE TO RUN FOR AN OFFICE. Offices for the OACA are listed on the front
of this newsletter, and OSSAA offices include a representative for each class.
Every OACA office (except president) is open.
The representatives for 5A and 2A (previously classified as 4A and B)
are open for the OSSAA Advisory Board.
If you are interested in running for one of the offices in the OACA or
serving on the OSSAA Advisory Board, you can inquire about or put in your name
for open offices by contacting Karen Jennings at kjennings2@elreno.k12.ok.us.
Also, we will be voting on adding a point for attending a rules meeting and
for attending the conference.

OACA was started to formalize a network of
academic coaches throughout the state.
The Association provides a newsletter, coaches
conference, and All-State competition and recognition. Membership dues are $30.00, with $5.00 going
to the OACA scholarship fund. Dues cover
the year from September to September.
High school academic team coaches are eligible for membership in OACA. Middle/junior high and elementary coaches are
eligible for associate membership. They
have all the privileges of the high school coaches, except for nominating
students for All-State recognition.
